FAQ
How is ‘kaia’ pronounced?
Rhymes with papaya.
What does ‘kaia’ mean?
‘kaya’ is the Sanskrit word for ‘body.’ But we spell it like ‘Gaia,’ the Greek goddess of the earth. So to us ‘kaia’ means ‘body and earth.’
What is your logo?
Our logo, the ‘sprout,’ was inspired by an ancient Celtic symbol with several positive associations. It looks like a sprout and its symmetry connotes balance. So when you read our logo and name from left to right it reads, ‘balanced body and earth foods.’
How does your granola have such a long shelf-life without preservatives?
Psst…the secret is low-temperature dehydration. By removing much of the food’s moisture, things like mold can't grow and spoil the food. And the lack of moisture preserves the crunch, too!
Is your granola 100% ‘raw’? Is it organic?
Yes and yes! We use only ingredients that have never been heated above 118 degrees and our granolas are certified organic by QAI.
Where does the saturated fat in Buckwheat Crunchies come from?
The saturated fats come largely from the coconut and also from the nuts and seeds. While saturated fats have received a bad rap in the press, the scientific jury is still out on coconut as a whole food. It has been observed that some populations that consume a high proportion of their diet from coconut (up to 63% of their calories!) have no elevated risk for heart disease. Further, the saturated fat in coconuts is structurally different from saturated animal fats and our bodies may therefore process it differently. Our view is that coconut is a whole food that represents a nutritious package of fiber, iron, phosphorous and zinc in addition to some saturated plant fats.
Where do the other fats come from?
The other fats are mostly healthy nut fats!
Where do the sugars come from?
The sugars are primarily natural fruit sugars from the raisins and dates. Agave nectar, an unrefined low-glycemic sweetener, contributes just some of the sugars.
What is the glycemic index?
The glycemic index is a measure of how high your blood sugar rises after eating a given food. Higher blood sugar responses are linked with weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
What is agave nectar’s glycemic index?
Agave nectar’s glycemic index is a mere 30, making it safe for diabetics.
What can I do to help fight hunger?
Make a contribution to the UN's World Food Program (http://www.wfp.org) or The Hunger Project (http://www.thp.org).
